5-year Imprisonment for exam cheats-FG

Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, yesterday disclosed that the Federal Government has taken steps to domesticate the revised convention of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) which stipulates a five-year jail term or an option of N200,000 fine for cheats.

Wike made the disclosure while inaugurating the governing councils for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), National Institute of Education Planners and Administrators (NIEPA), the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and the National Committee of WAEC.
He said: “My charge to you is simple: you must continue to ensure that the integrity of WAEC and its examinations is not compromised under any circumstances.

“I want to assure you that the Federal Government remains committed to meeting all its obligations to WAEC.
“In November 2013, officials from the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC were at the National Assembly to brief the House leaders on the need to domesticate the Revised Convention of the West African Examinations Council to bring Nigeria on the same page with the other four Anglophone members of the council. “Interestingly, the revised convention stipulates stiffer penalties of up to N200, 000 fine or 5 years jail term for all forms of malpractices in WAEC examinations.”

Speaking on the importance of distance learning to national development, the minister urged the NOUN board members to ensure that the university meets the expectations of government and the public.
